Title: Informational Principles of Embodied Cognition
Abstract:
While Artificial Intelligence is widely pursued in the way as to achieve
certain "intelligent" behaviours in various contexts, there is
increasing evidence that it can profit significantly from being
considered under the perspective of understanding what the fundamental
laws of cognition are. The success of biological organisms under strong
constraints on consumption of energy and resources as compared to
artificially engineered intelligent systems which are quite generous in
the available resources indicate that there is a gap in understanding
that awaits to be closed. A key in this appears to be the judicious use
of embodiment and of informational resources. Especially the formalism
of Shannon information has increasingly crystallized as an immensely
powerful concept.
Under this perspective, cognition, it turns out, is governed by
mathematical laws, invariants and principles which constrain the
decision-making of organisms and agents and which can be elegantly
expressed in informational terms. This opens a fresh route to analyse,
understand and synthesize principles of cognitive systems and their
evolution.
The talk will present principles, and applications to understanding
the origins and evolution of cognition, consequences for cognitive
organization and observations, clarify the role of embodiment in
cognitive processing, and finally show some examples how these
principles can be used for the generation and even discovery of new
principles of autonomous behaviour in agents.
Biography:
Daniel Polani is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University
of Hertfordshire. Interested in the principles behind cognition for the
purpose of understanding biological and Artificial Intelligence, his
main efforts concentrate on using - especially - information-theoretic
principles for studying (multi-)agent and robotic systems, constructing
methods for generating behaviour intrinsically and "naturally emerging"
mechanisms which produce plausibly "intelligent" behaviour in artificial
agents with limited sets of prior assumptions. One of his domains of
particular inspiration is provided by the complexity of the RoboCup
domain. He is PI in the Horizon 2020 consortia socSMCs on studying
social sensorimotor contingencies in a principled way, and WiMUST,
responsible for mission planning in swarms of autonomous robotic
geosurveillance submarines. He is currently president-elect of the
RoboCup Federation, and associate editor in a number of journals,
including JAAMAS, Advances in Complex Systems, Frontiers in
Computational Intelligence.
